Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna noodles uncooked

  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese shredded and divided

  • ½ cup parmesan cheese shredded and divided

  • ½ pound lean ground beef

  • ½ pound Italian sausage

  • 1 onion diced

  • 2 cloves garlic minced

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 cup onion

  • 3 large garlic cloves minced

  • 1/3 cup fresh basil chopped

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

  • 28 ounces whole tomatoes canned

  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes canned

  • 4 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

  • 2 cups ricotta cheese

  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley chopped

  • 1 egg beaten

Directions

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Cook pasta al dente (firm) according to package directions. Rinse under cold water so pasta doesn’t stick together and set aside.
  • Brown beef, sausage, onion and garlic over medium high heat until no pink remains. Drain any fat.

  • Add whole tomatoes with the juice and break apart with the spoon as much as you can (you can continue breaking these apart as it cooks and becomes softer). Stir in remaining ingredients.

  • Simmer uncovered on low heat for 15-20 minutes or until sauce reaches desired consistency.

  • For the cheese mixture, combine 2 cups mozzarella, 1/3 cup parmesan cheese, ricotta, parsley, and egg.

  • In a 9×13 pan add 1 cup of meat sauce, then 3 noodles on top, next layer with a 1/3 of the cheese mixture and then 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce. Repeat this same process two more times. You will finish with 3 noodles and then the remaining sauce.
  • Cover with foil and bake 40 minutes.

  • Uncover, sprinkle with remaining cheese (2 ½ cups mozzarella cheese and ¼ cup parmesan), and bake an additional 15 minutes or until browned and bubbly. Broil 3 minutes.

  • Rest 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy with garlic bread and a salad.
